What Is Rent Control Checker?

When you're browsing rental listings, there's no way to tell if a unit is rent controlled just by looking at it. You might shortlist a handful of places, book showings, and then find out the building is too new to be covered — or you'd have to manually research every single listing before deciding.

Rent Control Checker is a free Chrome extension that shows you the rent control status right where you're already searching — on Realtor.ca and REALM. No extra tabs, no manual lookups, no account needed, and zero personal data collected.

Why I Built This

As an agent, I'd walk my clients through what rent control means and how it works in Ontario. But when it came time to actually browse listings, there was no quick way to check — you'd have to look up every building individually to figure out if it was covered. That extra step slows everything down.

I wanted something that just shows you the answer while you're already searching. No extra tabs, no manual research. That's what this does.

Ontario Rent Control — Quick Reference

In Ontario, buildings first occupied before November 15, 2018 are rent controlled. That means:

  • Annual rent increases are capped by the provincial guideline
  • Increases are limited and predictable year to year
  • Buildings occupied after that date don't have the same caps
Rent Control Checker expanded details showing address, first occupied year, and type
